Jordan's trip to Outward Bound

From 22nd August to 11th September, I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Ngaru Huhuka Outward Bound course alongside 11 other incredible lifeguards from around the country. Over these three weeks, I was pushed out of my comfort zone and into an environment that challenged both my physical endurance and mental resilience. I spent days bush-bashing up some gnarly mountains, sailing through the Queen Charlotte Sounds, and white-water kayaking down falls and rapids. I also had the chance to learn key survival skills while working closely with a group of new friends to overcome obstacles together.

I was able to appreciate the stunning landscapes that Aotearoa has to offer, while also developing key leadership qualities and strengthening my problem-solving skills as part of a team, whether it was tackling a difficult route, mastering outdoor skills, or supporting each other through personal challenges. Each day brought a new adventure, and every challenge helped me discover more about my strengths, resilience, and the importance of teamwork.

I won't share too many more details as we're not supposed to spoil it for people who might attend in the future, but i've got the following pieces of advice for anyone considering going:

  1. Do it!

  2. Have an open mind

  3. Powerade powder is a godsend

  4. Just use the bucket

  5. Mā te wā

By the end of the course, I returned with unforgettable memories, lifelong friendships, a stronger sense of confidence, and a deep appreciation for the gorgeous land and seascapes that New Zealand has to offer. I am truly grateful to Tairua Surf Life Saving Club and Surf Life Saving New Zealand for giving me this incredible opportunity. Outward Bound was an experience that will stay with me forever.
