TAIRUA SURF LIFESAVING CLUB
Established in the 1960s, Tairua SLSC is committed to the prevention of drowning and injury. During the summer period, we set up the familiar red and yellow flags, to show the safest place to swim, and identify potential victims and dangers, working proactively to prevent people from getting in trouble.

Tairua is a renowned expert-level surf beach that draws some of the top surfers from New Zealand and around the world. It is a challenging beach. The bay can be calm as a lake or boast swells that see jet-ski tow in conditions for the brave surfer. Tidal conditions see ever changing rips, sand bars and lagoons appearing along the 1.6km beach.

Throughout the summer, people of all ages descend on Tairua Beach to cool off, play and have fun. Our Club is responsible for patrolling the beach during the busy summer period.
There are many ways you can get involved with our Club, without even getting wet. Patrol Support, Parent helpers, becoming a member, supporting a committee or becoming a sponsor.
Because of the generous help of many, we are able to patrol the Tairua Beach and train the next generation of lifeguards. Come down this summer and find out what it's all about!
Guarding Tairua Beach and its people
Tairua Surf Lifesaving Club is proud to serve the Tairua Beach community on New Zealand's beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. We are committed to the prevention of drowning and injury at Tairua Beach.
Our Club delivers a range of courses and programmes, from lifeguarding, water safety and education services. Throughout the summer, you will see people from all ages learning and experiencing our water-based programmes. Developing the next generation of lifeguards is key for our club. They are the guardians of Tairua Beach. By setting up the familiar red and yellow flags on our beach, they help show our beach-users where it is safest to swim.
Our lifeguards undergo extensive training, helping them to identify potential victims and dangers, and to work proactively with the public to prevent people from getting in trouble. These volunteers patrol our beach every weekend from December until the end of February.
Paid lifeguards join our volunteers on the weekdays for five weeks in January and February, throughout the peak of summer holidays.

Trainee Lifeguard Programme
Our annual intake is typically April, and open to candidates who are 14+, or turning 14 during the year.
We run five weekend camps between June and October and aim to qualify the cohort by the beginning of the season.
Candidates need to:
Swim 400m in a pool under 8-minutes
Be run fit (and a good level of general fitness and strength)
Be a current club member
Available to participate in training camps throughout the year
Commit to learning and developing their knowledge

Adult Lifeguard Programme
Adults are invaluable to our club. Whether it is assisting with patrols, or being an active member of our summer delivery team, we need and value your help!
Set the standard for your children and complete your own lifeguard qualification, and lead from the front.
Our programme includes evening online lessons along with on-beach training in Tairua. We will work with you to become qualified with the SLSNZ Surf Lifeguard Award.
The exam comprises of:
400m pool swim in under 9 minutes
Rescue releases assessment in the pool
Run/swim/run in the surf
Tube rescue assessment
Practical surf knowledge test and theory exam
